The place where one comes from
Ulo, founded by Ogechi Harry in 2019, offers unique, ethically-made, African-influenced bedding and other homewares. “Ulo” means one’s home or house in Ogechi’s native language, Igbo. “Ulo” proverbially translates to, “the place where one comes from.”
Harry created Ulo after seeing a void in the current market. The brand’s goal is to convey the diversity of African experiences through inspiring, premium housewares for those who appreciate home style that reflects global experiences. Ulo strives to provide high-quality, toxin-free products, benefit communities, respect and preserve traditional artisanal processes, and are healthy for the environment. As a brand new company, Ulo was moving into an unsaturated space. This space allowed for unlimited growth potential but posed problems reaching potential clients and generating “buzz.”
The search for more
When Ogechi was expecting her first child, she wanted to decorate the nursery with African-inspired bedding and home décor. Still, all she could find was the typical cliché safari theme.
“I wanted something that offered a more modern and diverse portrayal of Africa that reflected African experiences influenced by a global perspective. We and the continent are more complex than a safari.” – Harry
Moving forward with her company proved difficult without messaging to showcase what the company represents and who they are. She wanted to create a message that spoke of the complex nature of African culture while bringing a fresh perspective of Africa as a whole.
Spreading culture and comfort
712 Creative established the branding for Ulo and aided in the launch of their social media platforms. Most notably, the client’s following on social media gained momentum in a very short amount of time, reflecting both the uniqueness of Ulo’s brand as well as the effectiveness of the brand messaging created by 712 Creative. They now have a very clear understanding of who and what their brand is. They now have strong messaging, decisive strategies, and clearly understand who their consumers are.
